Project Virgle = Virgin + Google. Most likely an April Fool's Joke. This is simple warm-up editing to get encouraged to finish my rock crab film :-)
Basically, that night I was desperate. I needed to escape the irrationality of humanity in giant systems. I even went to Radio Shack and purchased a $30 4-to-4-pin so I could transport my video into this here hp computer. I scripted my 2.25 minutes of unemotional boredom. I can't blame myself for being this way: (1) it was midnight (2) my blood sugar was low (3) I was drained from the first week of the quarter, being bombarded with information.
Here was my script. It took me about 5 times of practice before I said it well in front of the camera.
"Hello Team Virgle! My name is Victoria Minnich and I am a Ph.D. student in environmental media at UC Santa Barbara. I briefly wanted to tell you why I am determined to go to Mars (unfortunately not in thirty seconds). First of all, I had the privilege to briefly meet Larry Page at the 2007 AAAS meeting in San Francisco, and he seems like a very common sense, reasonable kind of person. So, the proposal to venture to Mars also seems quite 'reasonable.' Secondly, I wrote a long manuscript, which included meditations on the future of human society on planet Earth. One of my Plan Bs was a venture to Mars. So this idea has been embedded in my mind and my value system for quite a while. When there is a will, there is a way. And third of all, I am training myself to be a generalist and my next pit stop besides field sciences and media is engineering. I hope to establish eclectic knowledge, which can be of collaborative, practical use on such a trip, because it is ultimately our built technological-environmental niche space that will keep us alive in the first place! Thanks for listening, and in conclusion, I sincerely hope Virgle is not an April Fool's joke, because this certainly is not MY April Fools joke."
